Webb for VP

Clinton will win the nomination, but if she doesn't pick Jim Webb for VP the future of our party will be seriously imperiled.  Time and again, the Democratic Party chickens out and goes with the "safe" choice for VP.  In 2000, it was Lieberman instead of Edwards.  In 2004, it was Edwards instead of Dean.  In eight years, Webb will be what Reagan was in 1980.

Sure, Webb is rough and ready.  And his wife is Asian American.  Let's think about the revolutionary aspect of his vice presidential candidacy.  Let's think about the fact that his stable moral values, along with his tough stances on defense and security, and finally his demands for economic fairness, make him the perfect Democratic leader.

He's been married three times, sure, but Webb for VP along with Wesley Clark for Defense Secretary and Joe Biden for Secretary of State is our best bet for respect from both parties.  Let's not chicken out on this.  Bayh and Warner don't exude strength.  They exude genius.  We don't need genius.  Look at Bush.  The electorate admires strength, not genius.  And Webb fits the mold.

Re: Webb for VP (none / 0)

No.  Not Webb.  I don't care how popular he has become since he came out against the war in Iraq.

Webb was a GOP switched to Dem when it was convenient to do so.

In 2004, it was revealed how misognistic he is.

He's anti-abortion and conservative on many social issues.  Calling yourself a Democrat does not a Democrat make.  Being against the Iraq war does not make you a Democrat.

Olympia Snowe is against the Iraq War, but last I checked, she's still a Republican.

If you want the Democratic Party to take sharp turn to the Right, then throw your support for Webb.

Re: Webb for VP (none / 0)

Couple of things:

Webb has long said he found himself grounded with the Democratic party on economic matters - and only felt disillusioned with the party post-Vietnam on foreign policy rhetoric and goals.  It was a steady progression back home to the party of his family history post-Reagan.

Misogynistic?  Please tell me youre joking.

His position on social issues is very consistent with a majority of Democrats who oppose abortion personally, yet uphold Roe Vs Wade and vote with the caucus against Republican proposals.

He is at the heart and soul of the Democratic Party since FDR on economic populism and clean government.

And for that reason - he'd never jive with a Hillary Clinton WH.  The status quo of entrenched interests is not his bag.

I'd see him maybe in an Obama or Edwards Adm - but I think he'll remain in the Senate.

Re: Webb for VP (none / 0)

On the issue of misogyny, I am not joking.  Just more informed than you:
"They said Webb deepened sexual harassment at the academy by authoring a 1979 article in Washington magazine, titled "Women Can't Fight," that scorned women's presence at the college, saying they were unfit to lead male troops and eroding discipline with promiscuity."

This was a big issue when Webb ran in 2004.

The majority of Democrats DO NOT oppose Roe v Wade.  The majority of Democrats support the high court ruling.

Re: Webb for VP (none / 0)

Webb appologized for that article and had women soldiers who supported him.  It was not a big deal in 2004 (first cause Webb ran in 2006) and it was only a single act of desperation by Allen in a TV ad.  Do not repeat Right-wing frames about a good Democrat.

And please do not suggest that I am "less informed" than you.

And clearly you cannot read.  I said: "His position on social issues is very consistent with a majority of Democrats who oppose abortion personally, yet uphold Roe Vs Wade and vote with the caucus against Republican proposals."

Of those that Democrats that personally oppose abortion, the majority uphold Roe vs Wade and take a more logical approach towards ensuring rights while trying to curb abortion.

Not that a majority of Democrats oppose Roe vs Wade.  Never said it.

Re: Webb for VP (none / 0)

Webb blew it when Clinton signed on to support his Iraq legislation and he trashed her on TV the same day.

If Clinton opts to go the "military" route, it will be Wesley Clark for VP.

Re: Webb for VP (none / 0)

Webb didnt blow it - he was in "tell the truth mode" and showed why the Democratic Party needs to be the party of honesty and strength of conviction.

Not the party of "doubletalk" and "triangulation."
