Gergen: Obama Needs Game Changer (Clinton or Gore)

A very nice article by David Gergen today.

He says basically that Obama needs some serious sparks in his campaign, and I have to agree with all three of his suggested options...

1) Pick HRC as VP.

or

2) Pick Gore as VP.

or

3) Name your cabinet already, attaching trusted voices to your campaign.

No way on Cabinet (2.00 / 1)

I think option 3 is a horrible idea. He will get blasted for "thinking he's already the president."

If he does that I will be severely dissapointed. I can't stress how bad of an idea that is.

I am full heartedly coming around to option 1. I think she brings more than Gore.

Re: No way on Cabinet (2.00 / 1)

I pretty much agree with Gergen's premise.  Though Obama might win without a game changer, we should be doing better then might in a year like this.  He needs a game changer.

And yes, only 1 or 2 -- most likely 1 -- can do it. People won't be paying attention to cabinet choices when they go to vote.  A very high-profile VP choice, though, can shift the dynamic of the race.

Re: No way on Cabinet (2.00 / 2)

agree 100%.  I am a Clinton supporter, but don't want her to be VP for different reasons, but at this point, don't think Obama can pull it off w/out a big-time game changer as the diarist says.

In this election, we should be at least +/- 6-8pts Nationally...and rising.  Not locked into a heat race, that's gonna come down to who gonna like rolling in the mud more.

A solid choice has to be made first, but if the VP doesn't add some wattage to the campaign, I don't like how close we still are.  I think it's gonna have to be someone like Clinton or Gore, although I doubt Gore has the stomach for politics now.

Re: No way on Cabinet (none / 0)

I agree with you Markjay. We can't take any chances. Clinton is the best choice and I say this as a long time Obama supporter.

He may not have a choice. (2.00 / 2)

http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/200 8/08/20/should-obama-choose-clinton/

Consider this finding from the new Wall Street Journal-NBC News poll out Wednesday night. A bare majority of Clinton supporters, 52 percent say they will vote for Obama. Twenty one percent favor McCain, while 27 percent are still undecided or say they will vote for "someone else.''

Nearly half of Clinton's supporters are still not on board with Obama!

Would Clinton add to the ticket? Apparently. The poll shows Obama leading McCain by three points. If Clinton were at the top of the ticket, she would be leading McCain by six.

Wow.  Who ever thought I would be agreeing with Gergen?  Amazing things happen every day.

Re: He may not have a choice. (2.00 / 2)

But we cant have Clinton on the ticket.  Republicans dont like her.  And she is old and has been in washington to long.  We need a VP who is about CHANGE.

That is why Biden is the pick.  He has only been a senator 30 years.

You're right, you're right, you're always right.  Who am I kidding.

I know, Obama planned to keep the race tight all the way until November 1, in order to keep the ratings up!  That's it, I knew it!

Clinton instead only gets us +3 over McSame ???? (none / 0)

That's nothing, especially this far out.

I'm actually surprised. Or maybe I've been hearing too much puma lately.

If Hillary was the Dem nominee, she'd already be elected.

Not metaphorically. Literally. George W. Bush would be moved out and we'd start her first term early.

Because we all know it takes a Clinton to clean up after a Bush!

LOL.

This far out? And Clinton is @ +6, not +3. (2.00 / 2)

This far out???  We're 70+ days away from the GE.  We are coming down to the wire, and after the Conventions are over, we are in the home stretch at 60 days.

And +3, is wrong.  Clinton is polling at +6, and would be more than we are now.  Just something to ponder, if we put them together.

Re: This far out? And Clinton is @ +6, not +3. (none / 0)

Clinton +6 over McCain
Obama +3 over McCain

That nets us +3

Of course, the two are apples and oranges, as Clinton is only a hypothetical matchup.

Still, I am finding it rather amusing that after all the puma angst, swapping Hillary for Obama gets us a mere +3 percentage points.

Does Pennsylvania Count? (2.00 / 1)

If Obama wants to win Pennsylvania, he needs to pick Clinton.

by jfoster on Thu Aug 21, 2008 at 10:38:48 AM EST

Re: Does Pennsylvania Count? (none / 0)

He will win my state, Pennsylvania, with Clinton or without her. There are other states that I'm more worried about, for instance the one directly to the west.
