Barack Obama Doesn't Support CA Proposition 10

I'm proud to do some work against Prop 10; these are my own thoughts on today's scandal. Cross-Posted from Calitics

In California, Barack Obama is unbelievably popular and is going to win in a landslide. What isn't popular, is Proposition 10 which is a blank check handout to the Texas oilman funding the initiative. Which is why you see the strange coalition of damn near everyone in the state opposing the initiative. A coalition where the California Labor Federation has teamed up with the Chamber of Commerce to oppose Prop 10. A coalition where Calitics is on the same page as the San Diego Union-Tribune. A coalition where the California Green Party agrees with the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association. And every major environmental group is opposed, including the Sierra Club, League of Conservation Voters, Natural Resources Defense Council, Environment California, Alliance for Responsible Energy Policy and the Union of Concerned Scientists.

Since all the Yes on Proposition 10 campaign has going for it is money, they have now taken to misleading Democrats into thinking the initiative has the support of Barack Obama. It doesn't (for good reason).

The expansive No on Proposition 10 campaign has demanded a retraction. Full details after the jump.

Breaking: The Earth Turns; It Matters on Election Night

You can't blame a lot of us for getting excited about the current state of the polls. But the problem is that the earth turns. On the Daily Show the other night, Tom Brokaw said that in 1988 NBC called the election at what translates to 5:16 on the west coast (and we have two huge competitive races in Alaska). This year may be another of those years and while I implore everyone to do all they can to Get Out The Vote, I am driven crazy by those who are more focused on having fun on election night than winning on election day. Case in point, an email I received about a giant LA party against the neck-in-neck California Proposition 8 which would revoke a right. Some opponents want to incite GOTV malpractice and start partying a full two hours before the polls close.

[SUBJECT LINE] National, Local Organizations Host Huge LGBT Election Night Party
Hundreds of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community members and their friends will gather in Hollywood on election night to watch election results and celebrate the historic campaign to defeat Proposition 8. The event, which will take place at the Music Box @ Fonda Theater, is sponsored by more than 15 national and regional organizations and figures to be the largest LGBT election night party in L.A. history.

Guests will enjoy a hosted bar and food, while watching the election results on a huge on-stage projection or on any of 8 giant, flat screen monitors throughout the theater and lounge.[...]
WHAT: LGBT Election Night Party with hosted bar and appetizers, 8 giant flat screen monitors to watch election returns, live updates from community and political leaders, live DJ.

WHEN: Tuesday, November 4
6 p.m. - Midnight

WHERE: The Music Box @ Fonda
6126 Hollywood Blvd.

The event starts at six. The polls close at eight. Do you see a problem?

Please note, this isn't an official NO on 8 Party, because the No on 8 GOTV will be working like crazy until the polls close, which pretty much proves my point.

Moveon is Not Greenwashing Gavin Newsom's Corporate Party

When San Francisco blogger Sasha McGee noticed that Gavin Newsom was being feted by PG&E and AT&T at the Denver convention, it wasn't much of a surprise to see a DLC candidate running for governor of the largest state. What was a surprise, was that Moveon was also listed as a sponsor.

CA-Gov 2010: Gavin Newsom sides with PG&E Against Clean Energy Act

I have little doubt that Senator Hillary Clinton would be the Democratic Nominee had it not been for her caving to right wing talking points and voting for the Iraq War. Being on the wrong side the the biggest foreign policy disaster in a generation is what advanced her career from inevitable nominee to junior senator. At the time, many of us in the netroots were flabbergasted, we knew it was a disastrous course of action and came to the conclusion that those who sided with George Bush and the neocons either had no grasp of the situation or were doing it for as a purely political calculation (and a poor one at that as Clinton discovered).

Iraq was the single biggest foreign policy decision, but when it comes to the global climate crisis, I'm getting a sense of déjà vu from the positioning and language used by San Francisco Mayor and 2010 California Gubernatorial hopeful Gavin Newsom as to why he's siding with PG&E against the Sierra Club on clean, renewable energy.

Gavin Newsom Torpedoes CA-Gov Bid at Netroots Nation

As many of you saw, San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom gave a green speech introduction for Van Jones on Sunday at Netroots Nation. But immediately after his green speech, a local blogger asked a very important question:

I just asked Newsom if he would support the Clean Energy Act.  At first, he said yes -- absolutely.  Then he said, "oh are you talking about the one about PG&E?"  I said yes.  He said, "oh no it's horrible."  I asked him to elaborate, but he would not.  I then asked, "is that because your consultant [Eric Jaye] is working for PG&E?"  Newsom denied it, but really.  It was kinda pathetic.

Indeed. As we all know, Al Gore thinks the entire country needs to go 100% clean electrically by 2019 and Mayor Newsom won't try for his city to do the same by 2040?

MySpace and MTV and McCain in Manchester - 7PM Eastern

McCain is the first (and may end up the only) Republican to appear on MTV/MySpace's interactive forum.- Todd

myspace-badgeDisclosure: MySpace is paying my travel
MANCHESTER-Following John Edwards and Barack Obama, tonight (7PM eastern) John McCain will be the first Republican candidate to participate in a MySpace/MTV interactive forum.

It should be an interesting night. On one had, New Hampshire's same day registration provision allows candidates on both sides of the aisle potential for a youth surge not showing up in the polls -- which could be a substantive boost in the expectations spin. For McCain specifically, he has been bleeding market share in the MySpace friends primary. I'll be looking to the interactive perspective as it fascinates me. What do you think I should be looking for during the event?

The Blogosphere Day Story

Late in the evening of October 23, 2004, I coined the term Blogosphere Day. At the time, I was directing the online campaign in PA-08 for Ginny Schrader (D-Blogosphere) and was trying to do anything possible to hype her campaign. Little did I know what would become of a two minute entry on dkosopedia.

To be perfectly honest, I'd forgotten about it until it showed up in the National Journal just as Tim Tagaris and I were plotting on when to kick of the online fundraising for Paul Hackett. The rest, as they say, is history.

Today, there has already been $16,395 raised online for ActBlue. Yet if every US Senator who has applauded the event were to max out, that number would triple.

A couple of other thoughts on the tradition and on teamwork...
